February Wine Tasting

Our February Tasting features wines from Chile with host Milko Mladinov from Winebow.  Date is February 19 (Thursday) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Our theme is "Patagonia’s Just Not About Pricey Outerwear!"

Okay!  Our wines for the Priory February Tasting are not from as far south as Patagonia, but they’re not too far – the Aconcagua and Central Valley regions of Chile!  Each wine brings with it the notes and terroirs of those up and coming appellations!

·         Cousino-Macul Antiquas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo 2011)

·         Leyda Vineyards Pinot Noir (Valle de San Antonio 2012)

·         Leyda Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc (Valle de San Antonio 2013)

·         Terra Noble Single Vineyard La Higuera Carmenere (Valle de Maule 2012)

Post-Gazette Restaurant Guide

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently published its Dining Guide, featuring a wide variety of new, newish, established and ethic restaurants.  Each is great in its own way, from Everyday Noodles in Squirrel Hill, which offers some amazing and authentic Chinese cuisine, to Legume Bistro in Oakland, which was among the pioneers of the farm to table restaurants in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh's Number Three Among "Must Visit" Cities

Conde Nast Traveler magazine has listed Pittsburgh as the number three "Must See" city in the world for 2015.  Pittsburgh ranks just behind Cartagena, Columbia, and Santa Theresa, Costa Rica.  Conde Nast found Pittsburgh's many cultural and recreational options, in contrast to its reputation as the "smoky city," created a compelling destination.

Mayor of Pittsburgh Featured on Undercover Boss

The CBS television program "Undercover Boss" ran an episode recently featuring Mayor Bill Peduto. Peduto went undercover as a man from Kentucky who was shooting a documentary on municipal workers in Pittsburgh.  Despite a pretty ridiculous disguise, the mayor was an engaging and earnest host, and the program showed Pittsburgh at it's late October best.  If you'd like to get an idea of Pittsburgh's neighborhoods and people, this episode is a good entre.

Meeting of the Malts Update

As noted earlier on these pages, we'll be hosting a new type of event for us at the Grand Hall in January -- a "Microbrew Summit" featuring some of the top brewers in Pennsylvania.  "Meeting of the Malts III" is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Brewers Association, and is set to take place on January 22 at our Grand Hall.  We've just gotten word that Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Food and Flavors editor Bob Batz, Jr. is going to moderate the highlight of the event -- a beer dinner with a panel made up of Chris Troegner of Troegs Brewing, Bill Covaleski of Victory Brewing, and Scott Smith of our Pittsburgh-based East End Brewing.  The panelists will discuss their roads to success, and their philosophy of beer making.  Beers will be paired with five courses of food selections from our own chefs, Pete Phillipy and Mike Henney.

There will also be pre and post dinner sessions with Bill (pre) and Chris (post).
